More than simply giving off a menacing personality, Dirk Pitt is also someone with an enormous sense of intrigue. A hero to many who know him, Pitt manages to keep his humorous character under extreme measures. Expertly flying both fixed wing and rotary aircraft as an excellent army pilot, Pitt has received many commendations for his courage. A Senator's child and a father of twins with a passion for collecting classic cars; Dirk still manages to make time to unwind with a little tequila with lime and salt.
As much as a constant traveler can have roots, Dirk Pitt makes his home on the grounds of the Washington National Airport in an old reworked aviation hanger. On a typical drive to work at the National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA) where Pitt is in command, he gets the occasion to reflect on many of the sites that other peers take for granted when they live in Washington, D.C.
As the head of NUMA, while simply on his way to work Dirk can admire all of the stone figures and commemorations in his city; many of the same sites that holiday makers from around the world visit Washington, D.C. To experience and explore. Just to cite a couple of these sights, there is the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial, and the WWII Memorial. He also passes by the Capitol, the National Mall, and Georgetown University not to mention CIA headquarters, the Pentagon and the White House.
But of all the many sights Pitt sees, Arlington National Cemetery may remain the most meaningful to him being the location where fellow comrades may have been buried. A close second would be the United States Air Force Memorial, since he is after all a graduate of the U. S. Air Force Academy.
In his daily endeavors at NUMA to help preserve and explore the planet's seas and many shipwrecks, Dirk Pitt remains a man of many surprises composed of many different personality traits and interests. He invites the ever so delicate coming together of state-of-the-art technologies with time-honoured values. Dirk always maintains his deep appreciation of all of the sacrifices folks have made to make this country attainable. Together, his appreciation for what they represent together with his own patriotic pride continues to drive Dirk Pitt's passion to protect life as we all know it at any cost; whether or not it is an individual or a whole population.
